“We’re Cheering for Engineering!” – an intro to simple and compound machines; plus building.
Starting with simple machines, students will spend 2 weeks exploring motion, gravity, and friction with beanie babies and matchbox cars, ramps, wheels, wedges, screws, and levers. In week 3 they will use their knowledge to construct a game launching wedges. In week 4, we will try our hands at a compound machine scavenger hunt. In week 5 they will build their own lever to measure weight, and to use as a trebuchet, and then construct a catapult and some towers for a real-life angry birds style game. Students will spend our last session constructing an egg container to move an egg down a ramp without it breaking.
