About Kurtz Elementary Empower Hour
Empower Hour will offer students a wide variety of programming in their own school building, immediately before or after school.
All Empower Hour programs will meet once a week for six weeks, and are priced in three different tiers to reflect the amount of supplies needed. The programs at each specific school will change throughout the year - some examples of programming that we will offer include art, sports, science, music, karate, crafting, recreation classes, and more!

FOREST DWELLINGS (4/7-5/12) AM and PM : In this hand-building clay project, students will create dwellings for mythological creatures or amphibians, choosing to create a home for a fairy or a toad! Beginning with flat clay slabs, students will learn how to join two dimensional clay slabs into three dimensional forms. They will create texture and embellish their structures to simulate trees, leaves, knot holes and burrows reminiscent of natural habitats found in woodlands. Students will also develop an understanding of clay, clay properties and investigate various glazes and application tools and methods. SHOOTING STARS (5/16, 5/19, 5/21) AM and PM: In this 3 day hand-building clay workshop, students will develop an understanding of clay properties, processes & vocabulary as they create a Shooting Star with clay and multimedia materials. Beginning with flat clay slabs, students will cut a star shape, then add faces with surface texture and detail. The completed clay project will become a “shooting” star with added multimedia materials!
